In 2019 the 'Open' tourney was won by Matt Harborne of Mutual Circle with 4 1/2 out of 6. In 2018, the first year that the event was opened up to all BDCL players, the winner of the 'Open' tournament was Henrik Stepanyan of Sutton Coldfield club with 5 out of 6. In the 2019 'Challengers' (Max 135 grading) section Mike Groombridge (Walsall Kipping) shared first place with Richard Leaper of Mutual: both scored 5/6. The 2018 'Challengers' Tourney resulted in a three-way tie between John Freeman of Shirley & Wythall, Florin Valea of Warley Quinborne, and Giles Stanton of Redditch. They all scored 4 1/2 out of 6. Mike Walker (1938 - 2015) was an enthusiastic and committed member of Mutual Circle chess club for 40 years. He served as club secretary and as a team captain for much of this period. He always had a friendly word for other players and was ready to help out with any and all tasks that benefited the club and its members - whether this involved setting up the boards, providing lifts, encouraging and instructing novices, organising internal tournaments, or just turning up for club nights on cold and rainy evenings! Mike was also very active in the Birmingham & District Chess League, serving as President (1995-96), Honorary General Secretary (2008-13), Chairperson of the Rules Committee for some 30 years, and as a valued member of various sub-committees. He occasionally represented the BDCL at English Chess Federation meetings. He had trained as a chess arbiter, and helped run several weekend chess congresses. Chess was one of his passions, alongside applied mathematics, skiing, and West Ham Football Club! We miss him. |
