Stop Press: In May, 2024, the club changed it's name.
We had been known as Mutual Circle since 1920 but members thought it was time to alter this to a name that gave some idea of our geographic location and did not risk misleading people into thinking that we were an insurance company! It will take a while to update the entire website so please forgive us if you find any confusing references to our previous name.
In May 2023, the club moved to a new venue. We are now meeting at The Jewellers Arms, 23 Hockley Street, Birmingham, B18 6BW.
We are a medium-sized, friendly club that meets mainly on Tuesday evenings. We have a full program of League matches (half of them Away) so we don't meet every week at our own venue. (Therefore, if you are thinking of coming along to the club it is always best to contact our club secretary first).
In 2024/25 we aim to field three teams in the Birmingham & District Chess League (BDCL) in Divsions 1, 2, and 4. We may decide to field another team in the Dudley & District League but this is looking doubtful at the moment.
In 2023/24 we ran three teams in the BDCL in Divisions 1, 3, and 5. Our Div 3 and Div 5 squads both finished as runners-up in their respective divisions and so gained promoton to the divisions above. Our Div 1 team finished 5th in the top divsion. We also entered a team in Division 3 of the Dudley League where we shall finish 2nd or 3rd.
We currently have three teams competing in the Birmingham Rapid-play Summer League. Play in this competion is still ongoing.
We are always to keen to see or hear from prospective new members, whether it be for friendly games at the club or for competitive match chess.
